Senior Advisor – Cyber & Enterprise Architecture
- Opportunity to develop your career and work for a global company
- Contribute to the success of Rio Tinto by applying your technical and professional expertise
- Southern California – hybrid, with onsite presence in Boron and/or Burbank as required
- For California based roles the expected salary range is $125,440 – $172,480
About the role
We are looking for an experienced Senior Advisor – Cyber & Enterprise Architecture to take a leading role in shaping and securing the future U.S. Borax technology environment.
This is a highly technical architecture and cybersecurity position, suited to someone with strong foundations across networking, infrastructure and cybersecurity who has progressed into architecture and technical leadership.
You will provide expertise and leadership across cybersecurity, technology risk and architecture, ensuring business solutions, digital services and operational technology environments are secure, resilient, scalable and aligned with the organization's technology strategy.
The role will work across major technology and transformation initiatives, providing technical direction, challenging and guiding vendors and service providers, and ensuring security and architecture considerations are embedded from the outset.
This is not a traditional governance-led cybersecurity or high-level Enterprise Architecture position. We are looking for someone with genuine technical depth who understands how infrastructure, networks, security, applications and services fit together and can apply that knowledge to complex transformation programmes.
The role is largely remote. In the short term, onsite presence in Boron is expected approximately one day per week, although this will be driven by business and project requirements rather than a fixed hybrid schedule. The new professional services office in Burbank will also provide an onsite location as the organization evolves.
Reporting to the IS&T Leader, you will:
- Lead cybersecurity architecture and advisory activities across business and technology initiatives.
- Provide specialist technical guidance across cybersecurity, infrastructure, networks, applications and operational technology environments.
- Lead security architecture reviews for critical business and OT solutions.
- Ensure security is embedded into technology solutions through secure-by-design and zero-trust principles.
- Assess technical and cybersecurity risks and work with risk owners, project teams and technology partners to develop practical mitigation strategies.
- Manage and provide technical oversight of Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs), ensuring effective delivery and appropriate service levels.
- Act as a technical authority when working with external vendors and service providers, understanding and challenging proposed solutions and ensuring accountability for outcomes.
- Lead and facilitate technical design and architecture reviews.
- Develop and maintain solutions, application and technology architecture roadmaps.
- Assess technology solutions and provide recommendations around selection, integration, security, optimization and future-state architecture.
- Support major transformation initiatives including ERP transition, infrastructure transformation, technology migrations and carve-out activities.
- Refine, improve and optimize existing technical environments and programmes rather than focusing solely on future-state strategy.
- Work closely with business stakeholders, the IS&T team, vendors and project teams to translate complex technical risks and decisions into clear business terms.
- Support technology investment and strategic planning decisions through strong architecture and cybersecurity expertise.
- Drive continuous improvement across cybersecurity, architecture and technology processes.
About you
To be successful in this role, you will bring significant technical experience combined with the ability to operate at architecture and senior advisory level.
We are particularly interested in candidates who have developed their careers through networking and/or infrastructure into cybersecurity and subsequently architecture, giving them the technical depth to understand, challenge and guide complex technology solutions.
You will ideally bring:
- Approximately 7–10+ years of cybersecurity and related technology experience, with significant exposure to architecture and major technical programmes.
- Strong technical foundations across networking, infrastructure and cybersecurity.
- Experience designing, reviewing or governing cybersecurity architecture across complex technology environments.
- Strong understanding of cybersecurity architecture, incident response and MSSP operating models.
- Experience working with and technically managing third-party vendors, managed service providers and technology partners.
- Demonstrable involvement in significant technology transformation programmes such as ERP transitions, infrastructure transformations, carve-outs, migrations or major platform changes.
- The ability to understand technical designs in sufficient depth to challenge vendors, identify weaknesses and take ownership of technology and security outcomes.
- Experience improving and optimizing existing technical environments as well as designing future-state solutions.
- Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to communicate technical risks and architecture decisions to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience operating in a small to mid-sized organization or similarly broad technology environment, where individuals are expected to work across multiple technical disciplines.
- Manufacturing, industrial or Operational Technology (OT) experience would be highly advantageous.
- Exposure to hosting and broader enterprise technology environments would be beneficial.
- A degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science or a related discipline is preferred.
- Relevant industry certifications such as CISSP, SANS, CISM or CISA would be advantageous.
This role will particularly suit someone who enjoys retaining technical depth while operating at a senior advisory level – someone comfortable moving between architecture discussions, cybersecurity risk, infrastructure, vendors and major transformation projects rather than specializing exclusively in governance or GRC.
What we offer
- A largely remote working model with onsite engagement driven by business and project requirements.
- Genuine end-to-end ownership and influence across cybersecurity and technology architecture.
- The opportunity to help shape the future technology environment as U.S. Borax transitions towards operating as a standalone organization.
- Exposure to enterprise-wide transformation across infrastructure, cybersecurity, applications, ERP and operational technology.
- Direct interaction with senior business leaders, technology specialists and strategic delivery partners.
- The opportunity to build and influence an environment rather than simply inherit and maintain an established corporate technology model.
- A work environment where safety is always the number one priority.
- Competitive base salary is reflective of your skills and experience with an annual incentive bonus.
- Access to top-tier family-friendly health programs including medical, prescription drug, dental, vision, life insurance coverage, and various voluntary benefits.
- Excellent retirement plan including up to 6% defined company contribution; Generous 401k matching program.
- Attractive share ownership plan.
- Comprehensive leave policies which cover all the moments that matter in life: PTO (paid time off), paid holidays, and paid bereavement leave.
- A generous parental leave policy, which ensures you’re able to spend quality time with your new family.
- Discount programs for leisure purposes and access to Virgin Pulse with incentives supporting your wellbeing.
- Access to our Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which provides confidential counselling or expert guidance for you and your family to help get through life’s challenges.
About U.S. Borax
U.S. Borax is a global leader in the supply and science of borates, with a long-established operation in California and products used across a diverse range of industries and applications around the world.
U.S. Borax is now entering an exciting new chapter as the business transitions from the wider Rio Tinto Group to operate as a more independent, standalone organization. This transformation creates a rare opportunity to help build and shape the technology environment of an established business as it moves towards greater independence. Rather than owning a narrowly defined area within a large corporate technology structure, you will have the opportunity to take genuine end-to-end ownership, influence key technology decisions and help establish the systems, architecture, partners and ways of working that will support U.S. Borax for the future.
For technology professionals, this offers the best of both worlds: the scale and complexity of an established industrial organization combined with the ownership, visibility and influence typically associated with a much smaller business.
