Dewatering Specialist 

About the Role 

The Dewatering Specialist is responsible for the safe execution of dewatering operations including ensuring dewatering systems are planned, installed, operated, maintained, and relocated safely and effectively to support mining activities and pit development, which will be delivered predominantly through specialist contractors at the Simandou Iron Ore Mine. The role would be heavily focused on training, upskilling and mentoring Guinean national supervisors to achieve best practice. 

The position is site‑based on a 4 weeks on / 2 weeks off (4:2) roster on a FIFO basis back to your home base. 

Reporting to the Dewatering Superintendent, you will collaborate with Mine Operations, Mine Technical Services, HSEC, Maintenance, Plant team and contracted service providers to achieve an inclusive and high-performance team environment. 

Key Responsibilities: 

• Coordinate daily and weekly dewatering operations, including pumping, piping, mechanical works, and contractor activities, aligned with mine plans and progression.
• Manage installation, relocation, commissioning, and optimisation of dewatering systems to ensure efficiency, capacity, and reliability.
• Lead, coach, and supervise multidisciplinary teams while coordinating shift activities and ensuring effective handovers between crews.
• Enforce safety standards by conducting pre-start meetings, promoting a strong safety culture, ensuring compliance with HSE requirements, and participating in audits and incident investigations.
• Oversee contractor management, including mobilisation, performance reviews, workforce discipline, attendance, and alignment with operational requirements.
• Ensure operational readiness by allocating resources, maintaining equipment and consumables availability, and achieving daily and weekly dewatering targets.
• Maintain compliance with regulatory, environmental, and company requirements while ensuring accurate monitoring data, reporting, and serving as the key interface between operations and contractors.

 Qualifications and Experience 

• Qualification or recognised training in mining, mechanical or related discipline(desirable) 
• 5+ years of operational experience, including supervisory exposure 
• Strong understanding and experience supervising dewatering activities in an open‑pit mining environment 
• Technical understanding of dewatering systems, pumps, pipelines, and associated mechanical equipment 
• Experience working with specialist contractors across pumping, piping and mechanical scopes in large scale open pit mining environments 
• Strong organizational, problem solving and decision-making skills 
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills 
• Familiarity with HSEC standards and regulatory compliance requirements  
• Experience working in remote or international mining operations 
• Training and assessment qualifications would be advantageous 
• Proven ability to train, mentor and develop operational personnel 
• Proven ability to manage contractor performance and ensure delivery against operational targets 
• An organized and disciplined approach to planning, reporting, and compliance 
• Proficiency in French (written and verbal) would be highly desirable 
• Confidence working across multi‑disciplinary teams in a dynamic site environment

About the Simandou Project
The Simandou Iron Ore Project is located in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. It is Africa’s largest infrastructure and mining project and represents one of the largest known reserves of high-grade iron ore in the world.

Rio Tinto holds rights to Simandou Blocks 3 and 4 through SimFer, a joint venture between the Government of the Republic of Guinea, Rio Tinto and Chalco Iron Ore Holdings (CIOH). Construction of the mine, together with the associated rail and port infrastructure, is well underway with first production from the SimFer mine expected in 2025.
