About the role

We are looking for a Principal Adviser Energy & Carbon Controllership to strengthen the quality, governance and integrity of energy and greenhouse gas data across Rio Tinto. As a senior technical subject matter expert, you will help ensure Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions information is prepared consistently and can support a wide range of internal and external reporting needs.

This role will lead technical methodologies and decision-making, monitor global developments in climate reporting, and guide the integration of new abatement activities into reporting processes. You will work with colleagues across product groups, sites, policy, finance, legal, assurance and project teams, while coordinating technical outputs across the Internal Reporting and Performance team.

This is an opportunity to influence group-wide standards, improve reporting systems and controls, and coach senior advisers in an area that is central to Rio Tinto’s climate commitments.

What you’ll be doing

Reporting to the Manager Internal Reporting and Performance and working with the Energy and Carbon Controllers, you will be:

• Govern group-wide technical data, methodologies and controls for Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions and energy reporting.
• Lead data preparation, quality management and integrity checks for information used in internal reporting, external disclosures, planning and forecasting.
• Interpret evolving legislation, climate policy, reporting standards and guidance, translating requirements into practical group-wide processes and procedures.
• Coordinate the integration and reporting treatment of new fuels, abatement initiatives and other emerging emissions-related activities.
• Support and lead audits and assurance activities over energy and greenhouse gas data, acting as a key technical contact for assurance stakeholders.
• Design and improve reporting tools, controls, visual systems and metrics, including fit-for-purpose changes to Enablon in partnership with Operational Assurance & Reporting.
• Provide technical advice to product groups, site reporters, policy, finance, legal, projects and other stakeholders on reporting methodologies, data quality and application of requirements.
• Coordinate team outputs and coach Senior Advisers, building capability and promoting simpler, smarter and more consistent ways of working.

About you

Required for Success

• A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team.
• Demonstrated technical experience in greenhouse gas, energy, climate or closely aligned environmental reporting, including the interpretation and application of policy, legislation, standards or reporting methodologies.
• Experience managing data quality, controls, calculations and assurance requirements in a complex industrial, resources or similarly regulated environment.
• Strong analytical capability, including variance assessment, materiality evaluation and the use of reporting or visualisation tools to produce reliable insights and outputs.
• Experience influencing diverse senior stakeholders and coordinating technical work across functions, sites or business units without relying on direct reporting lines.
• A qualification in engineering, science, environmental management, business analysis or a related technical discipline, or equivalent relevant professional experience.

Helpful for Success

• Experience with Enablon or another enterprise environmental, sustainability or ESG reporting system.
• Experience supporting greenhouse gas or energy audits and assurance engagements.
• Knowledge of emissions reporting and climate policy requirements across more than one jurisdiction.
• Experience coaching technical professionals and leading continuous improvement across systems, governance or reporting processes.
