Owning the annual compliance and reporting delivery plan for the Southern Hemisphere, including direct management for APAC and quality and process oversight for Mongolia and South Africa, liaising with local teams as needed.
-
Delivering critical decision support by partnering with regional tax advisors and key business leaders, while monitoring legislative and regulatory developments across all jurisdictions and assessing their impact on compliance and reporting obligations, including Pillar Two / global minimum tax requirements.
-
Maintaining a robust governance and control environment across the region, including consistent application of tax policies, procedures and best practices, development of jurisdictional standards and guidelines for core income tax processes, and support for internal and external audit, governance reviews and risk assessments.
-
Resourcing and embedding GTTO technology and transformation initiatives into operational delivery, leading regional change management and driving continuous improvement to simplify workflows, reduce manual effort, improve accuracy and build sustainable, repeatable practices.
-
Leading, coaching and developing a diverse team of around 20 tax professionals across Brisbane, Perth, Mongolia and India, setting clear expectations, building technical depth and delivery discipline, and fostering a values-led culture of accountability, collaboration and continuous learning.
-
Acting as the primary relationship owner for tax operations across the Southern Hemisphere, building trusted partnerships with finance, commercial and operational leaders, external auditors and tax authorities, and collaborating closely with Regional General Managers and GTTO stream leads to deliver joined-up outcomes for the function.
About you:
-
A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team.
-
12+ years’ post-qualification experience in a professional services firm and/or multinational in-house tax environment, with significant leadership and operational delivery responsibility, together with a professional accounting designation (CA, CPA or equivalent).
-
Deep knowledge of Australian corporate income tax and advanced understanding of tax effect accounting (IAS 12) and related accounting standards, with demonstrated ability to plan, resource and manage complex, multi-jurisdictional compliance and reporting programs to deadline and quality standards.
-
Proven experience leading and developing high-performing teams, including a coaching-led leadership style and experience supporting people through change with clear expectations, regular feedback, empowerment and deliberate stretch.
-
Experience embedding process or technology change into operational teams, including change management, training and adoption support, together with a track record of identifying and delivering continuous improvements to operational processes.
-
Excellent communication, collaboration and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate complex tax issues into clear messages, influence across cultures and functions, and build trusted relationships with senior leaders, external auditors, advisors and tax authorities; experience in the resources, mining or energy sector, knowledge of regional tax regimes, Pillar Two / global minimum tax, tax technology platforms and complex tax reporting will be highly regarded.
What we offer:
-
Be recognised for your contribution, your thinking and your hard work, and go home knowing you’ve helped the world progress.
-
A work environment where safety is always the number one priority.
-
A competitive base salary reflective of your experience and skills, with annual incentive program and Rio Tinto share plan participation.
-
Flexible and hybrid working arrangements, based in Brisbane or Perth, with the autonomy to manage your schedule.

Exposure to a genuinely global, complex and high-impact portfolio — this role shapes how Rio Tinto delivers its tax obligations across multiple jurisdictions and contributes directly to our public reporting and transparency commitments.
